Sharenergy

Sharenergy is a project to establish community-owned renewable energy in the Rural Regeneration Zone of the West Midlands. The £780,000 project is funded by Advantage West Midlands and delivered by Energy4All. The project leader is Jon Hallé, who is based in Ludlow, Shropshire.

The model of sharenergy is similar to that of the successfully pioneered by Energy4All in other parts of the UK. In this model, renewable energy projects (so far, exclusively wind farms) are financed, owned and operated by a co-operative set up specifically for that task.

Members of the public from the surrounding area and the wider UK are invited to join the co-operative and invest from £250 to £20,000. The capital raised enables the project to be built. The Members then receive a return on their investment broadly comparable to that received from a savings account. This model has proved successful and popular. It enables control over and benefits from significant renewable energy schemes to be retained locally.
