Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre celebrates official reopening

The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre has officially reopened after several months working on a £1 million extension to the scheme.

Last year, the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre and Craven Arms Community Centre worked together to secure a £750,000 grant from the Advantage West Midlands.

The Discovery Centre closed in October last year and, following the completion of the work, refurbishment of the Community Centre will now get underway.

During the work, the Discovery Centre was extended to include a craft and activity workshop for use by visit artists, clubs and schools.

One of the key attractions added to the centre is a balloon-ride over the Shropshire Hills projected onto a 180°curved screen.

Additional funding for the work was provided through the European Regional Development Fund and Shropshire County Council.

The Craven Arms projects are part of a series of multi-use facilities being supported acrossShropshireby Advantage West Midlands through the Rural Regeneration Zone to boost local residential and business communities by providing greater access to services and facilities.

Matt Smith, Rural Regeneration Zone Partnerships Manager, said: “With the redevelopment of the former auction yard, supported by Advantage West Midlands, other investments through the MTI and now the progress made on these two facilities, Craven Arms continues to progress with the support of AWM and its local partners.

“The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre is invaluable in that it supports not only the tourism sector in and around Craven Arms but also provides a focal point for the community.

“The way the two centres have worked together to secure funding and provide connected and complimentary services to the community are a real example.

“This is one of several multi-use facilities that Advantage West Midlands is investing funding through the Rural Regeneration Zone and we’re delighted it is now in productive use.”

Councillor Barbara Craig, portfolio holder for Community Services at Shropshire County Council, said: "We are proud of the achievements of the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre over the last seven years, and with this investment we are certain we can continue to build on these achievements – offering an even better service to both residents and visitors to the area."
